Anxiety Disorders & Depression

Anxiety is a reaction a person experiences to a stressful event or situation. Some times anxiety is excessive and can cause one to suffer emotional, and even physical symptoms.
There are many types and subtypes of anxiety, including:

Anxiety & Depression

There are a lot of uncertainties in life. Most people have a healthy amount of worry to instinctively guide them away from danger. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

If you find yourself with recurring thoughts, urges, or images that you find unwanted, chances are this causes you a lot of stress. These obsessions don’t seem to go away on their own, and some people feel the need to repeat certain actions in order to neutralize this stress. Some compulsions might be behavioral, such as excessive hand washing or checking things. Other compulsions can be mental acts, such as counting or repeating words silently. If you feel driven to perform compulsions to reduce stress, or to silence the intrusive and obsessive thoughts, you may notice how time-consuming this vicious cycle tends to be. Pure Counseling PLLC providers have specific training in the therapies known to help in the short and long term.

Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can stop you right in your tracks; frozen body but racing thoughts. Recurrent and sudden feelings of intense apprehension or fearfulness, as well as feeling of impending doom. Physical symptoms can be present, including shortness of breath, chest pain, choking or smothering sensations, and fears of losing control. Some people describe panic attacks as having a pounding heart, sweating, shaking, feeling short of breath, and other symptoms. It is very important to rule out any medical conditions or side effects from medications you may be taking, so please discuss all of your symptoms and medications with your therapist. Whatever the root of the panic attacks comes from, Pure Counseling PLLC counselors utilize an eclectic approach with multiple psychotherapeutic tools to help you immediately and in the long run. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

There are many types of traumatic events: domestic violence, motor vehicle accidents, physical and sexual assault, natural disasters, etc. The events themselves may not be as problematic as our reactions to these events. With trauma, the body and mind can react so much that it comes out of balance and takes over. Some symptoms of trauma can include anger and aggression, anxiety, poor focus and inattention, impulsive and reactive, sleep disturbance, fidgety and hyperactive, irritability, hostility, defensiveness, and irrational. Understanding your triggers are the first step in achieving any relief. Therapy for trauma is individualized and can take some time as it is relationship focused. While our providers are not medication focused, we can work with your psychiatrist or physician to discuss psycho-pharmaceutical (medication) options.

Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is the tension or stress leading to the irresistible urge to pull hair on the body, with noticeable hair loss and distress, followed by temporary feelings of relief or gratification. It is most common to pick hair from the head (scalp), eyebrows, or other areas. There may be shame and embarrassment from the patches of missing hair, and some go through great lengths to hide or disguise the hair loss. Most people with trichotillomania have general or specific anxiety triggers prior to pulling the specific area where hair can be pulled. Some even have a mantra or rituals that go with the hair pulling, such as playing with the pulled out hair, rubbing the pulled hair across lips or face, or biting and chewing the pulled hair. Some people with trichotillomania also have Trichophagia, and compulsively eat the hair pulled. Rapunzel syndrome, as it is sometimes called, can lead to severe damage of the intestines and other internal organs.

Many people with trichotillomania also have excoriation, or skin picking disorder. Both disorders are an automatic response to anxiety or stress, and some people don’t realize they are doing it (such as watching tv). There may be other uncomfortable feelings, such as tension, frustration, boredom, fatigue, loneliness, or other emotions. Some people have tried unsuccessfully to stop pulling their hair out.

If you cant stop pulling your hair, eating your pulled hair, or picking your skin, or if you feel embarrassed about how you look because of these actions, please talk to a provider at Pure Counseling. This is not a phase, but a chronic and long term mental health disorder that can get worse without treatment.

Hoarding

Hoarding is a disorder where a person feels the need to save their belongings regardless of the actual value. Many hoarders collect, buy, or even steal items that are not necessarily needed, nor is there available space for. The result of being unable to part with or discard these items is extreme clutter in the home and can lead to severe distress and panic at the mere thought of throwing things away. If the hoarding behaviors go untreated, relationships with family and friends tend to be tense, health risks of the living environment deteriorate, and the safety of the home itself may become compromised.
